Aspergillus niger

The fungi, Aspergillus niger can be used to describe the species or a group of Aspergillus spp. with dark spores  and large radiate heads.   It is commonly found in dusty areas of buildings on carpet and elevated surface samples.   It is an infrequent cause of aspergillosis in immune compromised individuals.  In can grow well at 25 to 37 degrees Celsius.

Growth in culture is often rapid depending on the media.  The organism grows well on PDA, MEA and DG-18.  It can be difficult to distinguish between Aspergillus niger spores and Memnoniella spp. spores on an Air-o-cell cassette sample.
